ICANN has closed applications for its 2026 New Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLD) Program, and the domain industry is now waiting to see where the next opportunities could emerge.
On 12 August 2026, more than 1,600 primary applications had been submitted for new domain extensions, with the final figure still subject to confirmation.
For domain investors, however, the bigger question isn’t how many new extensions are coming. It’s which ones will actually create demand?
More TLDs, More Choices, and More Noise
The new gTLD round could introduce a significant amount of additional domain inventory across industries, technologies, geographic markets and consumer categories.
The next major milestone is ICANN Reveal Day, expected approximately nine weeks after applications closed. This should give investors the first detailed look at the proposed strings. From there, applications will undergo evaluation, objections, and, where necessary, contention resolution before successful extensions can be issued.
For investors, this creates both opportunity and risk.
A new extension doesn’t automatically make the domains registered under it valuable. The real opportunity will likely depend on factors such as:
